The Past Continuous: Intermediate

অতীতকালে কোনো ক্রিয়ার মধ্যবর্তী সময়ের কথা বোঝাতে আমরা past continuous ব্যবহার করি।

Soft music was playing.

People were walking in the park.

What were you thinking of?

Form

Past Continuous Tense এর রূপ হচ্ছে, be verb এর past form + present participle.

I/he/she/it was playing
You/we/they were playing

Negative

I/he/she/ze/it wasn't playing.
you/we/they weren't playing.

Question

Was I/he/she/ze/it playing?
Were you/we/they playing?

এবার আমরা past simple ও past continuous এর মধ্যে তুলনা করে এর ব্যবহার বোঝার চেষ্টা করবো।

I was doing. (= তুমি কোনো কাজের শুরু ও শেষের মাঝে ছিলে)

I did. (= কোনো কাজ সম্পন্ন করেছো)
We were walking home when I met Dan. (হেঁটে বাড়ি ফেরার মাঝামাঝি সময়ে)
We walked home after the party last night. (= সম্পূর্ণ পথটাই হেঁটেছো)

Kate was watching TV when we arrived.
Kate watched TV a lot when she was ill last year.

Past Continuous ব্যবহার করে তুমি বোঝাতে পারো যে কোনো কাজ করার সময় অন্য কিছু ঘটেছিল। যেমন -

Matt phoned while we were having dinner.
It was raining when I got up.
I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a book.
I hurt my back while I was working in the garden.
কিন্তু যখন একটা কাজ সম্পন্ন হওয়ার পর আরেকটা ঘটবে তখন দুটো কাজই past simpleএ হবে।
I was walking along the road when I saw Dan. So I stopped, and we talked for a while.
Compare/তুলনা:
When Karen arrived, we were having
dinner. (= অর্থাৎ সে যখন পৌঁছাল তখন "আমরা" ডিনার করছিলাম)
When Karen arrived, we had dinner.
(= অর্থাৎ সে পৌঁছাল আর তারপর আমরা ডিনার করলাম)
