Historical Present Tense বা ঐতিহাসিক বর্তমান কাল! Present Tense তো শুনেছি কিন্তু এই কালের তো নাম আগে শুনিনি। না শোনারই কথা, ঐতিহাসিক বর্তমান কাল আদৌ ব্যাকরণ শাস্ত্রের Tense নয়, এ হচ্ছে অলঙ্কারশাস্ত্রের কাল। অতীতের ঘটনা বর্ণনা করতে বর্তমান কালের ব্যবহার করা হলে সেটাকে বলে Historic Present। মাঝেমধ্যে একে dramatic present বা narrative present-ও বলা হয়।
Present Tense এর সাধারণ রূপের সাথে এর রূপের কোনো ফারাক নেই। ফারাক এর ব্যবহারে, সাধারণ Present Tense ব্যবহৃত হয় আক্ষরিক বর্তমান কালে আর Historic Present ব্যবহৃত হয় অতীতের ক্ষেত্রে। ঘটনার বর্ণনা Present Tense এ দিলে সেটা জীবন্ত হয়। এজন্যেই ইতিহাস লিখতে, খবর লিখতে, Fiction-এ আমরা এই কাল ব্যবহার করি। শুধু লিখতেই নয়, কথা বলতেও আমরা ঐতিহাসিক বর্তমান কাল ব্যবহার করে থাকি। নিচের উদাহরণটি পড়ো:
"এখনো সেদিনটির কথা আমার মনে পড়ে, নৌকা করে নদী পার হচ্ছি, হঠাৎ দেখি বিভৎস একটা কিছু ভেসে আসছে, একটা পচা লাশ।"
এখানে বক্তা নিজের অভিজ্ঞতাটিকে সুষ্ঠু ভাবে প্রকাশ করার জন্যে, অর্থাৎ দৃশ্যটিকে ফুটিয়ে তোলার জন্য ঐতিহাসিক বর্তমান কাল এর ব্যবহার করেছেন। অতীতকালে তিনি তার বক্তব্যকে এতটা স্পষ্ট ও জ্যান্ত করে তুলতে পারতেন না।
