gavel মৌলিক ব্যবহার (Basic Usage)

• May একটি Modal Verb, যার past form হল Might। May এবং Might উভয়ই প্রায় সমার্থক। তবে কেতাবি রীতিতে (formal) কিছুর চরিত্র বা আচরণ বোঝাতে May ব্যবহৃত হয়।

The seeds from the plant may grow up to 20 centimetres in length.

আবার মৌখিক বা সাধারণ রীতিতে (informal) might ব্যবহার করা শ্রেয়।

I might paint the kitchen purple.

• কোন কিছু ঘটার সম্ভাবনা জিজ্ঞেস করতে সাধারণত may ব্যবহৃত হয়না। এর পরিবর্তে could(n’t) অথবা be likely ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে।

• অতীতে কোনো কিছু ‘এরকম’ ছিল বা হয়েছিল বোঝাতে Might + bare infinitive ব্যবহার করা যায়। (এই ক্ষেত্রে May ব্যবহৃত হয় না)।

During the war, the police might arrest you for criticising the king.
Years ago children might be sent down mines at the age of six.

• যখন কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর খামতির পাশাপাশি তার অন্য কোনো গুন উল্লেখ করে ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখা হয়, তখন may/might + not... but... গঠনটি ব্যবহৃত হয়।

The painting may not be a masterpiece, but you’ve got to admit that the colours are striking.
She might not have danced very gracefully, but she had a lot of energy.

• অতীত, বর্তমান বা ভবিষ্যতে কোন কিছু ঘটা সম্ভব, এরূপ বোঝাতে may/might + have + past participle এবং may/might + be + -ing ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Do you think Jean may/might have completed the report by now? (Past Possibility)
He may/might be working at home today. (Present Possibility)
His maths may/might have improved by the time the exam comes round. (Future Possibility)

এইসব ক্ষেত্রে Can কখনই ব্যবহার করা যায় না। তবে could ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে। যেমন:

• প্রত্যাশিত কিছু করেনি বলে কারো নিন্দা করতে বা অসন্তোষ প্রকাশ করতে might/could + have + past participle ব্যবহার করা যায়।

She’s gone without us. She might have waited!
You could have done the ironing instead of leaving it all to me.
