May এবং Might: সম্ভাবনা অর্থে

• May একটি verb, যার past form হল Might। কিন্তু যেহেতু এরা Modal Verb, কাজেই অন্য Modal verb এর সঙ্গে আমরা এদের ব্যবহার করতে পারিনা মোটেই। বরং অন্য ক্রিয়াপদের পূর্বে এদের বসিয়ে আমরা অর্থ প্রকাশে সহযোগিতা পেতে পারি। May এবং Might উভয়ই প্রায় সমার্থক। অবশ্য কেতাবি রীতিতে(formal) কোন কিছুর চরিত্র বা আচরণ উল্লেখ করতে হলে May-ই গ্রহণযোগ্য। যেমন,

The seeds from the plant may grow up to 20 centimetres in length.

আবার মৌখিক রীতিতে might ব্যবহারই শ্রেয়। যেমন,

I might paint the kitchen purple.

• কোন কিছু ঘটার সম্ভাবনা কতটুকু রয়েছে তা জিজ্ঞেস করতে may ব্যবহৃত হয়না, বরং could(n’t) অথবা be likely ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে। যেমন,

Could it be that you don’t want to leave? (May it be that you… এরূপ হয়না)
এসব ক্ষেত্রে might ব্যবহার করলে করা যেতে পারে, কিন্তু তা কেতাবি শোনায়। যেমন,

Might they be persuaded to change their minds?

মনে রাখবে যে আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবে অনুমতি চাইতে May ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন,

May I leave now?

May I help you?

• অতিতে কোন কিছু ‘এরকম’ ছিল বা হয়েছিল এমন বোঝাতে Might(not May)+bare infinitive ব্যবহার করা যায়।

During the war, the police might arrest you for criticising the king.

Years ago children might be sent down mines at the age of six.

• আমরা যখন কোন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর কোন খামতির কথা উল্লেখ করে পাশাপাশি তার অন্য কোন গুন উল্লেখ করে ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখি, এরকম বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে may/might not + bare infinitive…but… অথবা may/might not have… + past participle + past participle…but…. নকশাগুলো ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন,

The painting may not be a masterpiece, but you’ve got to admit that the colours are striking.

She might not have danced very gracefully, but she had a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

• অতীত, বর্তমান বা ভবিষ্যতে কোন কিছু ঘটা সম্ভব এরূপ বোঝাতে may/might + have + past participle এবং may/might+be+ -ing ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন,

Do you think Jean may/might have completed the report by now?(past)

His maths may/might have improved by the time the exam comes round(future)

Malcom isn’t in his office. He may/might be working at home today(present)

মনে রাখবে এসব ক্ষেত্রে Can কখনই হবেনা। তবে একইভাবে may/might এর পরিবর্তে could ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে।

Do you think Jean could have completed the report by now?

অতীতে কোন কিছু অনেক সময় ধরে চলে থাকতে পারে এরূপ বোঝাতে may/might have been + -ing ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন

David didn’t know where the ball was, but he thought his sister might have been playing with it before she left for school.

• যখন আমাদের প্রত্যাশিত কিছু করেনি বলে কারো নিন্দা করি, তখন might/could + have + past participle করা যায়। যেমন,

She’s gone without us. She might have waited!

You might/could have done the ironing instead of leaving it all to me.
